Carol A. Jones graduated from the Brooklyn Hospital School of Nursing and became a registered nurse in 1960. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in 1974 from Pace University and an MBA in 1982 from Alabama A&M University. Her professional experience is broad. She was employed at the Brooklyn Hospital as a staff RN, scrub nurse, head nurse, and supervisor from 1960 to 1962 before she moved to Ethiopia, where she worked from 1962 to 1966. She made many improvements in medical care while working in Ethiopia. She was a nursing instructor, developed standardized lesson plans and curriculum, and served as the Dean of Women for 117 female students. She helped the Taferri Makonnen Hospital increase its beds from 28 to 80, delivered 684 babies, developed a full-service pharmacy, and implemented a special diet manual using foods readily available in the local community. Ms. Jones was the director and instructor for the School for “Dressers,” (practical nurses), which became accredited by the Ethiopian Ministry of Health. She also helped open a full-service outpatient clinic one weekend a month to service more than 300 Danakil patients in the Danakil Desert.
Ms. Jones returned to the Brooklyn Hospital and served as the Associate Director of Nursing until 1971. From there she moved on to Victory Lake Nursing Centre in Hyde Park, New York, where she developed protocol, policies, and procedures for the 120-bed facility, developed job descriptions for all positions, interviewed and hired staff, and led the facility to obtain its accreditation from the New York State Department of Health.
From 1977 to 1988, Ms. Jones worked in the role of Administrative Supervisor at Medical Center Hospital/Humana Hospital in Huntsville, Alabama. She was the Chief Occupational Health Nurse at Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville, where she implemented health fairs and smoking cessation programs, performed employment health assessments, and assisted in the design and reconstruction of the Health Service Suite.
She then moved on to the Central North Alabama Health Center, where she became the Development Officer, writing successfully funded grants each year for the Community Health Center and a new satellite health clinic. She was the Director of Clinic Operations and a member of the Board of Directors from 1982 to 1995. She became the chairperson for an ad hoc committee to merge health centers in 1984, chairperson for the Board of Directors for the newly formed community center from 1985 to 1995, and represented the Local Community Health Center at the National Association from 1982 to 2001.
Ms. Jones co-founded and became President of Management Enterprise Development and Service, Inc. (MEDS, Inc.), where she remains responsible for the day-to-day management of the company, project development, construction, facilities operations management, and human resources. She develops and writes protocols, policies, and procedures; manages facilities contracts in five states and the District of Columbia; manages health-care staffing contracts; and has developed and managed budgets for the facilities.
